Sidebar

An application sidebar that collapses to icons or off canvas on desktop and opens as a sheet on mobile, with a keyboard shortcut.

Installation

pnpm dlx shadcn@latest add @corsair-ui/sidebar

No setup needed: the CLI finds @corsair-ui in the shadcn registry directory. The files land in your project as source: edit them like your own code. More in Installation.

Examples

Collapsible to icons

The trigger shrinks it to icons with tooltips. The ⌘B shortcut is off here.

Dashboard

Off canvas, on the right

collapsible="offcanvas" slides it out of view and makes it inert.

API

PropTypeDefault
open / defaultOpen / onOpenChange

SidebarProvider: the desktop column, controlled or not.

boolean / boolean / (open) => voiddefaultOpen true
shortcut

SidebarProvider: toggles it with ⌘ or Ctrl; null turns it off.

string | null"b"
width

SidebarProvider: any CSS length, set as --sidebar-width.

string"16rem"
side / collapsible

Sidebar: the edge it sits on and what collapsing does.

"left" | "right" / "icon" | "offcanvas" | "none""left" / "icon"
mobileLabel

Sidebar: the visually hidden title of the sheet below 768px.

string"Navigation"
isActive / tooltip / asChild

SidebarMenuButton: the current entry, the tooltip while collapsed to icons, and your own link (with aria-current="page" when active).

boolean / string / booleanfalse / – / false
useSidebar

The state, for your own controls. Throws outside a SidebarProvider.

() => { open, setOpen, toggle, isMobile, openMobile, setOpenMobile, state }—

Styling

Restyle it in your project: className on each part, the theme variables, and these attributes with arbitrary variants, e.g. className="[&_[data-slot=sidebar-content]]:text-primary".

  • width on SidebarProvider sets --sidebar-width (16rem by default); the icon strip is --sidebar-width-icon, 3rem.
  • The sidebar carries data-state (expanded or collapsed), data-collapsible and data-side, and is group/sidebar: its children can use group-data-[state=collapsed]/sidebar:. sidebar-wrapper has the same data-state, for the rest of the page.
  • To keep it inside a box instead of the viewport, give SidebarProvider min-h-0 h-full and Sidebar h-full: they default to min-h-svh and sticky top-0 h-svh.

Accessibility

  • An aside landmark named "Sidebar" by aria-label, next to SidebarInset, a main landmark. Menus are lists.
  • SidebarTrigger reports aria-expanded, points aria-controls at the sidebar and lists the shortcut in aria-keyshortcuts.
  • Collapsed to icons, the text is visually hidden but stays the name, and tooltips show on hover and focus. Collapsed off canvas, it is inert.
  • Below 768px it opens in a sheet that traps focus, closes on Escape and gives focus back. The width change is off with prefers-reduced-motion.
